Matin Nuhamunada

Junior Group Leader / Teaching Staff

Universitas Gadjah Mada

Matin Nuhamunada received his BSc in Biology from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Yogyakarta, Indonesia, in 2014. He completed his MSc in Synthetic Biology and Biotechnology at the University of Edinburgh, UK, in 2016. In 2020, he was awarded the prestigious Copenhagen Bioscience PhD Fellowship from the Novo Nordisk Foundation (NNF) and pursued his PhD in Bioinformatics at the NNF Center for Biosustainability, Technical University of Denmark (DTU Biosustain), under the supervision of Prof. Tilmann Weber.

During his doctoral training, Matin conducted a research visit to the group of Prof. Nadine Ziemert at the University of Tübingen, Germany, where he contributed to the development of BGC Atlas, working closely with Dr. Caner Bagci. He obtained his PhD in 2024 and continued with a short postdoctoral appointment at DTU Biosustain. In 2025, he continued his career at the Faculty of Biology, Universitas Gadjah Mada, as a junior faculty member.

Throughout his time at DTU Biosustain, Matin co-authored six peer-reviewed publications. His primary research focus centers on large-scale genome mining of biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs), including the development of BGCFlow, an integrated and reproducible workflow for high-throughput BGC analysis. His work on BGCFlow and the development of a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) system for interactive exploration of local antiSMASH databases was recognized with the Best Poster Award at the NNF Data Science for Planetary and Human Health Symposium.

In addition to his research activities, Matin has been actively involved in synthetic biology education and community initiatives. During his MSc studies, he was a member of the University of Edinburgh overgraduate team for the 2016 International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Competition in Boston, USA, where the team received a Silver Medal. He later served as a mentor and supervisor for the UGM iGEM teams, which were awarded Gold Medals in 2021, 2023 and 2025.

Matin has received several competitive awards and research grants, including the LPDP Scholarship, the ITSF Research Grant, and the DIPI Small Research Grant. He also serves as an executive board at the Integrated Genome Factory and as an advisory board member of the synbio.id community.
